A Greeting from the Headmaster Frederick Weissbach

I am delighted to serve as the founding headmaster of Franklin Academy  a distinctive boarding and day school to educate children with nonverbal learning differences. We will open in September of 2003, and I have been on the job since July 1, working with an experienced team of innovative administrators to develop our program and direct the construction and renovation of campus facilities.

This is the Franklin team: Dr. Tom Hays is our Educational Director, and his doctorate degree is in Clinical Psychology. Throughout his career, Tom has worked with special needs children in both clinical and school settings. He comes to us from St. Paul's School in New Hampshire where he was Director of Student Support Services. Mary Murphy is our Residential Director. Most recently, Mary was a Director of the Louis August Jonas Foundation, an international leadership program for adolescent girls.
Previously, she served for sixteen years as a teacher, dorm parent, and administrator at Oakwood Friends School. Cynthia Pope is our Director of Admission. In addition to her extensive work in independent school admissions, Cindy has significant teaching and dormitory experience. Finally, Gabrielle Weissbach, who is my wife, serves as our Administrative Assistant. She has worked at various schools as Director of Admission and Director of Development. It will be her British accent that you will hear when you telephone Franklin Academy.

We live on a beautiful campus with our families, cats, and dogs in one of the most picturesque and charming regions of New England. We eagerly embrace the challenge of building a new school because we believe in the mission of Franklin Academy   to provide students with nonverbal learning differences the academic and social skills to become life-long learners, to pursue college and career goals, and to enjoy fulfilling lives.

Please review the information contained on our website. You might find our philosophy of education statement and the overview of our programmatic intentions to be particularly helpful as you assess a potential fit with Franklin Academy. In the coming months we will be posting more information about our school, including details about the academic program and social skills curriculum, the daily schedule and year-long calendar, profiles of faculty as they are hired, and photographs of the campus.

I am starting my twenty-seventh year as a secondary school educator, including nineteen years as a headmaster. Since graduating from Dartmouth College, much of my professional experience has focused on creating new educational initiatives and managing residential programs. For me, Franklin Academy is an exciting next step, and I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming year to discuss how we can make a profound difference in the life of students with nonverbal learning differences.
